The Azores are a cluster of nine volcanic islands in the middle of the Atlantic, due west of Portugal. Despite the voyages of various adventurers down the ages, the archipelago is not thought to have been discovered until the first half of the 15th century, long after the settlement of Iceland. About 250 thousand people live there, most on the island of São Miguel. The Azores have, among other things, a thriving cattle industry and an excellent breed of dairy cow.
The pictures show geothermal boreholes in good company with the residents of Terceira island and an ÍSOR staff member at work.
