ISOR recently signed a contract with the Spanish energy and oil company Repsol S.A on a geothermal assessment of three of the Canary Islands, namely La Palma, Tenerife and Gran Canaria. A considerable amount of geoscientific research has been carried out on the three islands in recent years. The geology of the islands is well mapped, chemical samples have been taken from springs and hot springs and analysed. Geophysical methods have also been used to map the geothermal energy and its origin on the islands, mainly resistivity, gravity and magnetic measurements. Several research holes have been drilled and thoroughly measured.
ISOR's role is to review all the data that Repsol owns and has access to, assess their quality and usefulness in delimiting areas for further research and possible use. ISOR will also assist in creating conceptual models, locating boreholes, as well as providing an assessment of the size of the geothermal areas and possible production capacity. The work is to take about five months and is to be completed before the end of February 2023.
