On 1 July 2023, ÍSOR celebrated its 20th anniversary. It was on that day in 2003 that new legislation took effect on Iceland GeoSurvey (Íslenskar orkurannsóknir) and a new agency took over projects that for decades had been in the hands of the National Energy Authority (Orkustofnun) and, from 1997, its Research Division. ÍSOR is therefore built on a solid foundation laid by a group of specialists who broke new ground in the history of geothermal utilization in Iceland with their research and their passion for it. Now, 20 years later, ÍSOR's staff, together with the whole world, face new challenges, among other things in energy matters and climate matters. It is clear that ÍSOR's geoscientific knowledge and its practical application, together with the experience, knowledge and data of earlier generations, will be the foundation of successful solutions and decisions that lead us onward to a bright future. ÍSOR's staff continues undaunted on that journey, under the slogan "Sustainability in action".
