In recent weeks, Orkubú Vestfjarða has been conducting the drilling of a new production well at Patreksfjörður, in addition to the one that was drilled in the autumn of 2024. The drilling rig Freyja from Ræktunarsamband Flóa og Skeiða is being used for the work, but ÍSOR experts located the borehole and have directed the research at Patreksfjörður in recent years.
Over the weekend, there was a turn of events in the drilling work when productive water veins were intersected below 200 m depth, and the temperature of the water is much higher than had been expected, or just under 40°C. The well is artesian (self-flowing), and the next steps involve further analysis of the water and the well's output. There is every likelihood that this borehole, on its own, can meet the water needs of the urban area with the help of heat pumps.
