ISOR has renewed its membership in the association of 37 geological survey institutions in Europe, EuroGeoSurveys, thereby strengthening Iceland's position in the community of European research bodies in the earth sciences. In addition, ISOR is a member of EERA-European Energy Research Alliance, https://www.eera-set.eu/, an association of research bodies in energy affairs, with an emphasis on geothermal energy. Among other things, on this platform ISOR takes part in numerous research projects that are used to develop knowledge and train staff, in order to tackle the challenges of the future.

Because of the foreseeable energy shortage in Europe, there is great interest in increasing the use of geothermal energy and other renewable energy sources there. There will therefore be great emphasis in the coming years on basic research and collaboration between research institutions, universities and industry in Europe in the field of harmonising geoscientific data and publishing it for decision-making on energy production and use.

GSEU (Geological Survey for Europe) is a 5-year research project that began in September and is funded by EU Horizon 2020. https://eurogeosurveys.org/gseu/

The aim is to create a joint service of Europe's geological survey institutions that supports objectives for meeting challenges in energy and climate affairs. ISOR's contribution will be in the field of geothermal knowledge, groundwater resources and offshore wind energy.
