Today, 11 February, is the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. On this occasion, we at ÍSOR wish to shine a light on the wonderful women who work among us and contribute to research and play a key role in monitoring and the sustainable utilization in the field of geosciences and natural resources.
ÍSOR women are involved in a wide variety of projects, from field work out in nature to data analysis, consulting and international collaboration. They study geothermal energy and groundwater, monitor seismic activity, work on environmental assessment and develop solutions that support the sustainable utilization of resources. The work is both challenging and exciting, where no two days are alike.
They are an important part of a strong team of experts who work together to increase our understanding of nature and its utilization.
Today, women make up about 40% of ÍSOR's team, but twenty years ago they were only about 23%, which shows a clear and gratifying development. This increase reflects both a changed reality in the scientific community and a deliberate emphasis on diversity and equality in our working environment.
On this day, therefore, we also wish to encourage girls and young women to explore the possibilities in science and technology – there are numerous exciting opportunities awaiting them.
We at ÍSOR intend to continue building a diverse and strong scientific community where talents are allowed to flourish – and to ensure that the next twenty years show even further progress.
